the uncool thing is not saying something

Boston Herald: Jermaine Wiggins grew up in East Boston. Given his size, he didn’t encounter too many bullies. But he did step in a few times when he saw someone else being bullied, and try to calm the situation. That was one of the messages Wiggins delivered to a packed auditorium at the Daley Middle School in Lowell this morning, as part of “Bully Prevention Week.” The other was not being afraid to tell an adult if someone is being a bully. ”There’s nothing wrong with being a snitch or a rat,” said the former Pats tight end, who is largely recognized for his contributions in the “Snow Bowl” playoff game against the Raiders during the Pats 2001 championship run. ”The uncool thing is not saying something. The uncool thing is seeing something happen, and not stepping up.” (Patriots alum Jermaine Wiggins delivers anti-bullying message to middle school youth in Lowell).

Bullying is an abusive treatment, the use of force or coercion to affect others, particularly when habitual and involving an imbalance of power. It may involve verbal harassment, physical assault or coercion and may be directed persistently towards particular victims, perhaps on grounds of race, religion, gender, sexuality, or ability. The "imbalance of power" may be social power and/or physical power. The victim of bullying is sometimes referred to as a "targeted individual" (Wikipedia).
